A useful theme helps guests recognize the kind of music they will hear. Start with your audience, then choose a song list you can deliver reliably.
Start with the room
Think about who is attending and how well they know the music. A mixed-age venue often benefits from broad, familiar material; a dedicated theme night can be more specific.
Ask the organizer about the audience, event length and any content preferences. Listen to the actual recordings you intend to play so an unexpected version or long introduction does not disrupt the round.
Aim for recognition and participation. A playlist full of obscure songs may fit a theme perfectly but leave most of the room waiting.
Choose a theme with enough range

Check recognition and variety
- Use clear song titles and artist names so players can identify the entries on their cards.
- Avoid repeating the same title-and-artist entry. Distinct recordings with identical labels can cause confusion when matching local files.
- Vary artists and styles within the theme instead of letting one performer dominate.
- Listen for slow starts, extended silence and unusually long versions. Plan how you will pace those tracks.
- If you use the folder builder, prepare 80–100 valid, unique song entries; that tool enforces this range.
Match the list to your playback method
A custom JSON playlist contains song information, not audio. Creating or downloading one does not supply music files.
For VirtualDJ, have the recordings available in the connector's selected media directory and review matches before the game. For external playback, prepare your music source and keep the audio and BingoBeats called-song sequence aligned.
Check the playback options offered for the selected list on the Music page. Do not assume that every custom list can use every playback source.
Rehearse pacing before the event
- Choose the playlist and intended playback method in a practice game.
- Try several songs and check the displayed title and artist against what you hear.
- Test a comfortable song timer, or leave it Off for manual pacing. Enable Auto only when you intend the game to advance automatically.
- Decide the winning target and explain it separately from the music theme. Finish your practice game before inviting guests to the event.
Common questions
Does changing the theme change the winning pattern?
No. The playlist determines the song pool. The host chooses the winning target in gameplay settings.
Will changes to my music folder update an existing custom list?
No. The saved list is a snapshot of the song entries you selected. Create or update the list when its contents need to change.
